Visit the Art Gallery of Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie to see this exhibit. Cobalt, Ontario in Northeastern Ontario was established in 1904 after the discovery of silver, cobalt, ore, and nickel deposits. The exhibitions showcase artists who visited the town and documented its boom between the First and Second World Wars. These artists include Yvonne McKague Housser, Bess Larkin Housser Harris, Isabel McLaughlin, Frederick Banting, A.Y. Jackson, and Franklin Carmichael. These painters represent the modern Canadian painters of their time when Canada's landscape was generally depicted as untouched wilderness, rather than industrial.
